What Is Software Monitoring In Logic Pro X

Mastering in Logic Pro X is absolutely possible, even with just stock plugins! Many get lost though. Not because they don't know, but because they don't know what they are aiming for. Perhaps you can relate. This article should help you get going, so you can confidently make great sounding masters for your music. The Software Monitoring function allows you to monitor incoming audio through any effect plug-ins that are inserted into an armed audio channel strip. Audio inputs must be assigned on the record-enabled channel strips for software monitoring to function.

I have been having the most irritating problem, and I'm sure it's a dumb fix.

When recoding anything into Logic Pro X through my mic, the monitoring volume is very low while recording. Also, I cannot adjust the volume of the track being recorded while it is being recorded with my fader. The only thing that affects volume is turning up the interface (apollo twin) which isn't an option. When I stop recording and hit play, the volume is back to a normal level. My current solution is to turn all the tracks way down... since turning the vocal up only has an effect on playback.

Does anyone have any advice. And just for clarity...

1) I do not turn on the orange 'I'... I can and that seems to solve it, but most of the time I end up getting a ton of latency. Really that shouldn't be necessary anyhow.

2) In my setting software monitoring is checked

3) Input monitoring only for focused track and record enabled tracks is checked

4) Indi. monitoring level for record enabled channel strips is checked as well

Any ideas???

Hmm, what does the manual say? (rethoric, for here it is:)
LP9UManual.pdf, p. 436
LP8UManual.pdf, p. 357
Using the Input Monitoring Buttons
You can use the Input Monitoring buttons to monitor audio tracks that are not armed.
Simply enable the Input Monitoring button on an audio track (or channel strip in the
Arrange or Mixer windows). This works when Logic Pro is stopped or playing.

Anyhoo, when you use (auto~) input monitoring, you monitor the signal that has +gone through Logic.+ If you already use direct monitoring (from the interface), it should not make a difference. If you monitor direct and through Logic (when both are routed to an outboard mixer), you'll get a doubling/delay effect, as Logic will add a bit of latency to the signal, even if the input chain is pluginless.
